What to expect at your first session

Thank you for allowing us to help you prioritize your health and wellness and make life better!

You may be a little nervous (or a lot!) about your first session, especially if this is a new experience for you. Don’t worry, almost everyone is. We understand – we’ve been there too.

This first session is an overview for both of us. It’s an opportunity to get to know one another and see if we both think this would be a good fit for what you’d like to improve.

Of course, in the first session we will talk about what brings you to therapy. However, we know you are more than your problems. We’d like to know more about you! This also helps us find your strengths and abilities that we can highlight to help you get where you want to go. We will probably ask a lot of questions about your life and health overall as well as about the issue you’ve come with. All the parts of your life are interconnected – mental/emotional, physical, spiritual, and relational – and areas that don’t seem connected can be affecting the others in very helpful, or not so helpful, ways.

Feel free to bring your own questions to therapy. We know what the usual questions are and try to address those, but you will likely have more specific ones.

We will also discuss payment and scheduling. We know money is most people’s least favorite discussion. Again, we’ve been there too. Finances are often a part of the issues that bring someone to therapy. We don’t want different expectations around money to get in the way of the therapeutic relationship. We will cover how our billing works, where to go for answers to questions, and when and how to have discussions if your financial situation changes.

If, at the end of the session, you believe this might not be your best option for therapy, please say so. We will not be offended! If we believe we are not the right therapist, we will do the same. Either way, we will offer referrals to other therapists we know and respect based on your presenting issues and context.

This is YOUR therapy, your journey. We are here to help and guide you on the way. Please call us with any questions or ask your therapist at your session. We’re here for you.
