The Unexpected
Posted: September 2, 2021
New beginnings come in all shapes and sizes. They come with varied circumstances and causes. Some of them we anticipate with a sense of excitement and possibility, and some arrive with difficulties and pain we never see coming.
Not all new beginnings are ones that bring happiness and joy. Often, they are a source of grief and pain, startling us out of our comfort zone. The loss of a loved one, a job, a friend, a home, our health, sense of purpose…each of these things bring about a new beginning, but they are not what we typically think of when someone says “new beginning.”
Coping with this type of new beginning tests our strength, endurance, tolerance for discomfort, and support systems. Experiencing unexpected and unwelcome new beginnings can lead to increased anxiety, depression, difficulties with coping, sleeping, changes in appetite, and feelings of overwhelm.
